Chasing Bass in Jersey Waters with the YKR Happy Eel Jerky

There’s nothing quite like a sunny day on the water with a rod in hand and a boat underfoot. I recently had one of those dream sessions out in Jersey, with light south to southeast winds, a beautiful clear sky overhead, and a 9.9m tide to stir things up just enough. With a slight swell rolling in, conditions were prime — and the bass certainly seemed to think so too.

The Setup: YKR Happy Eel Jerky in Green Natural

My lure of choice for the session? The YKR Happy Eel Jerky, 10g in green natural. It’s one of those lures that just has that irresistible action when worked in the current — especially when fishing the flow over shallow reefy ground or tidal races. I’ve always found success with these eels, but this trip really hammered home just how deadly they are in the right conditions.

Fishing the Flow

With the tide pushing hard, I set up to fish with the current, using the water movement to present the Happy Eel as naturally as possible. This is the key when targeting bass in tidal zones — you want your lure to mimic the natural prey getting swept along. I was fishing over a shallow reef, where the water was funnelling through tighter ground, creating the perfect ambush point for hungry schoolies.

Non-Stop Action

The bass were on the feed and the Happy Eel Jerky was getting smashed on nearly every drift. It was one of those sessions where you feel totally dialled in — presenting the lure just right, getting hits every few casts, and landing fish after fish. Most of the action came from school bass, all in great condition and showing real aggression. I did manage to tempt a few better-sized fish too, but it was the sheer volume of takes that made the session unforgettable.

The Verdict

If you’re into light lure fishing for bass and haven’t yet tried the YKR Happy Eel Jerky, you’re seriously missing out. The 10g version in green natural was the star of the show for me on this trip — casting well, tracking perfectly in the flow, and drawing takes like nothing else in my box.

Days like these remind me why I love what I do — and why fishing is as much about reading the water and choosing the right gear as it is about luck. Keep an eye on those tides, use the current to your advantage, and don’t forget to pack a few Happy Eels.
